Brand Names that Fuel The Discount Engine

A bewildering array of brand names faces the consumer on a daily basis. The discount industry revolves mainly around three types of brand names whereby they bring savings to the customer in the long run as these brands target specific areas and products and are usually at lower prices than the ‘smart’ brands available.

The generic brands form the first rung on the discount brand name ladder and sell at lower prices than house brands. The generic brands are usually of the same quality as branded products but because of bulk manufacture, they sell for a much lower price.

Larger supermarkets, retailers and stores have their own house brand or store-name brands that they offer at lower costs to the consumer. Either this is made possible because of bulk buying by the companies from the same manufacturers of smart brands or they use lesser-known manufacturers who produce products of equal quality.

What generic brands and house brands have in common is that they have done away with costly, non-essential packaging that will be discarded by the customer in any case. This ‘no-frills’ packaging of products minimizes wastage, brings about greater savings for company and consumer, and is ecology friendly.

Discount brands hold a niche market and favours lower income groups and allow consumers to stretch a tight budget to include products they would otherwise not be able to afford. These discount brands are a boon during times when the economy is in a slump and many consumers rely on these brands on a daily basis.
